Best for small firms

Clear scope, modest value, and buyers who usually just want a reliable local contractor.

Grounds and hedge maintenance Small-firm fit: high

Halstead Parish Council · near Sevenoaks, Kent

Value: £28,000 (3-year contract) Deadline: Sun 8 Nov, 17:00 (20 days) Marked suitable for SMEs

Gang mowing and fertilising the recreation ground, hedge cutting around the perimeter and car park, strimming, weed treatment, grass cutting at the village green, a bus shelter and a play area. One tree survey over the three years.

Our view: about as straightforward as public work gets. The task list is in the notice, so you can price it before asking for the documents. If you already work in West Kent, this is a good first bid.

How to bid: contact the clerk, Pip Nott, at clerk@halsteadparishcouncil.gov.uk or 07783 697490.

Planting and maintenance of flower beds Small-firm fit: high

West Bedlington Town Council · Northumberland

Value: £60,000 Deadline: Thu 5 Nov, 23:59 (17 days) Marked suitable for SMEs

Summer and winter bedding schemes, plus watering, weeding, litter removal and inspection of flower beds and planters. Beds must be visited at least twice a month in the growing season.

Our view: you can bid for flower beds only, planters only, or both, which suits a small horticultural business. Keep visit records: the council asks for them.

How to bid: Steven Young, westbedlingtontowncouncil@gmail.com, 01670 457070.

Grounds maintenance and village upkeep Small-firm fit: high

Cottenham Parish Council · Cambridgeshire

Value: £54,000 Deadline: Mon 16 Nov, 12:00 (28 days) Marked suitable for SMEs

Grass cutting around the village, including wildflower and biodiversity areas. Also the recreation ground: football pitch line marking and cricket outfield care, plus emptying bins, litter picking and cleaning bus shelters.

Our view: a strong fit if you already look after sports pitches. Experience with PitchPower assessments is "advantageous", so say so if you have it. The bins and litter work makes this a general village-care contract, not just mowing.

How to bid: contact the clerk, Jo Brook, at clerk@cottenham-pc.gov.uk or 01954 772828.

Grounds maintenance 2027–2032, two contracts Small-firm fit: high

Hythe Town Council · Kent

Value: £32,388 (town sites) and £57,000 (South Road, incl. sports pitches) Deadline: Thu 31 Dec, 17:00, by post

Edging, grass cutting, weeding, seasonal bedding, pruning and small tree works across the town's parks and open spaces. The South Road contract adds sports pitch maintenance.

Our view: five-year contracts, and you can bid for either or both. The notice doesn't say whether the values are yearly or for the whole five years, so ask when you request the pack. Tenders must arrive as sealed paper bids by post, so leave time for delivery. Interviews are in the week of 25 January.

How to bid: ask the Town Clerk, Julie Abbott, for the tender pack at Clerk@Hythe-tc.gov.uk or 01303 266152.

Close cleaning and office cleaning 2027–2029 Small-firm fit: high

Clyde Valley Housing Association · Lanarkshire and Glasgow

Value: three area lots: £47,000, £45,000 and £27,000 Deadline: Mon 16 Nov, 12:00 (28 days)

Cleaning the common closes (shared stairwells) in the association's blocks, plus an office. Split into lots: South Lanarkshire & Glasgow, North Lanarkshire & East Dunbartonshire, and North Lanarkshire.

Our view: the lots exist so local firms can bid for one area. Bid for the one nearest your base. Housing associations value reliable attendance and a quick response to complaints, so evidence both.

How to bid: on Public Contracts Scotland. Contact Monty Langmuir, monty@langmuirandhay.co.uk, 01698 268855.

Tree works and associated services Small-firm fit: medium

Ipswich Borough Council · Suffolk

Value: £140,000 over about 3 years (roughly £47k a year, our calculation) Deadline: check the portal, see below

Ongoing tree work for the council from November 2026 to October 2029.

Watch out: the official notice shows a deadline in October 2029. That's a portal glitch: the council explains its system couldn't take the real dates. The contract starts on 12 November, so the real deadline is likely to be soon. Register your interest on the portal now to see it. Any alert service that copies the notice's date will show 2029.

How to bid: register your interest under "Current Tenders" on Ipswich's e-tendering portal. Email: procurement@ipswich.gov.uk.

Worth a look if you have a bit more capacity

Bigger or spread over several sites, but still within reach of a well-run firm with 10–50 staff.

Large contracts: expect TUPE and pension costs

Worth it if you've run school or college contracts before. Price the inherited staff carefully: it's where most bids go wrong.

Cleaning services, Shipston High School Small-firm fit: low

Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire

Value: £958,333 Deadline: Mon 26 Oct, 12:00 (7 days)

Fully managed cleaning of a secondary school (about 4,300 m² plus a new sports hall), 40 weeks a year, with no weekend access.

Watch out: 8 staff transfer to you under TUPE, and one is in the Local Government Pension Scheme at an 18.4% employer rate. The school says it wants a "properly resourced service that is correctly priced", so a cheap bid won't win this. The deadline is very tight.

Tip of the week: start with parish and town councils. Four of this week's best small-firm opportunities came from parish and town councils. They usually skip the heavy questionnaires, often publish the full task list in the notice, and many still accept a simple priced quote by email or post. Win one or two and you have public-sector references for the bigger contracts.
